RESEARCH INFORMATION SHEET

Determinants of Moral Judgments

You are asked to participate in a research study conducted by Daniel M.T. Fessler, Ph.D., Associate Professor, from the Anthropology Department at the University of California, Los Angeles. You are a possible participant in this study if you are at least 18 years of age. For scientific reasons, this information sheet does not include complete information about the study hypotheses and the research questions being tested. You will be fully debriefed following your participation in the research. You will also be given an opportunity to ask any questions you might have about the hypothesis and the procedures used in the study. Your participation in this research study is voluntary. Your decision whether or not to participate will not adversely affect your relationship with the website where you found this call.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study is to explore how individuals differ in the moral judgments they hold.

PROCEDURES

If you volunteer to participate in this study, we will ask you to indicate your agreement or disagreement with different statements. We will ask you to rank statements from 1 (I agree most with this statement) to 4 (I agree least with this statement). We will also ask you to indicate your agreement or disagreement with 48 moral statements on a scale from 0 (Strongly disagree) to 6 (Strongly agree). We will then lead you to a third questionnaire about yourself. We will ask for your age, gender, income, political preferences and potential children.

Participation in the study will take a total of about 20 minutes.

POTENTIAL RISKS AND DISCOMFORTS

No potential risks are anticipated. If you however feel discomfort in answering certain questions, you are free to skip these questions without consequences of any kind.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS

Although you will not benefit from your participation in this survey, those interested in this research will be able to refer back to the author’s web site at http://www.sscnet.ucla.edulanthro/faculty/fessler/ and see the final results. In addition to the benefits of conducting basic research, society may benefit from a fuller understanding of how individual differences influence moral judgments.

You will not be paid for your participation in this research study.

CONFIDENTIALITY

This study is entirely anonymous - no identifying information will be collected about you in the main study. At the end of the study, we will ask you if you want to be informed about subsequent surveys. If you agree, you will be led to an additional survey where you may enter your email address. This information is collected and stored separately from your answers in the main study; at no point can we link your answers from the main study to your email address, if you provide one.

PARTICIPATION AND WITHDRAWAL

This study is entirely voluntary. If you volunteer to be in this study, you may end your participation at any time without consequences of any kind. You may also refuse to answer any questions you do not want to answer and still remain in the study. The investigator may withdraw you from this research if circumstances arise which warrant doing so.
